Naja, die Pak-Einheiten sollten eine Doppelrolle übernehmen, wie gesagt. Dafür wurde auch ein neuse Geschütz entwickelt. Hat aber alles nicht so geklappt.

This type of unit was introduced in May 1944. Based on a 'Fuehrerbefehl' the OKH/GenStdH/Org.Abt. on 12.5.1944 issued the order to form 22 'Artillerie-Pak-Abteilungen (bodenständig) (Heerestruppen)'.
The units were to be made ready for employment as follows:

a) 4 Abt. 8,8 cm by 25.5.1944
b) 5 Abt. 8,8 cm by 15.6.1944
c) 4 Abt. 7,5 cm by 10.6.1944
d) 9 Abt. 7,5 cm by 1.7.1944

Basic organisation was identical for each unit: Abt.Stab, Stabs-Bttr. and 3 Battr. zu je 9 Geschützen (8,8 cm Pak 43 oder 7,5 cm Pak 40), i.e. each unit had a total of 27 a/t guns in its inventory.
An Art.Pak-Abt. was intended to be employed in the a/t as well as the field artillery role. Therefore ammunition supply constisted of 50% armor piercing and 50% HE rounds.
Personnel for the formation of these units was drawn by using the II./A.R. 140, II./A.R. 139, Art.Abt. 711 plus personnel drawn from 18 artillery regiments of divisions employed on the Eastern Front.

The Art.Pak-Abt. were originally all planned as 'bodenständig' and so towing vehicles for the guns were limited to 9 tractors per Abteilung equipped with 8,8 cm guns and 15 tractors per Abteilung equipped with 7,5 cm guns.

Actually 23 instead of 22 Art.Pak-Abt. were formed.

Equipped with 27 8,8 cm Pak 43 were:
- Art.Pak-Abt.(bodst.) 1007, 1008, 1009, 1010
According to a report found in the files of the Gen.d.Art. the 1007 - 1010 each had 9 Schlepper Spa TM 40 available for towing their guns .
- Art.Pak-Abt.(t.bew.) 1037, 1038, 1039, 1040, 1041
Status changed from original 'bodenständig' to 'teilbeweglich' after being authorised to have additional gun tractors on 5.7.1944.
- and Art.Pak-Abt.(bodst.) 1052 (formed as no. 23 using personnel of former H.Stu.Gesch.Brig. 281)

Equipped with 27 7,5 cm Pak 40 were:
- Art.Pak-Abt.(t.bew.) 1053, 1054, 1055, 1056, 1057, 1058, 1059, 1060, 1061, 1062, 1063
Status changed from original 'bodenständig' to 'teilbeweglich' after being authorised to have additional gun tractors on 5.7.1944. According to a report found in the files of the Gen.d.Art. they each had 14 RSO available for towing their guns .

- Art.Pak-Abt.(bodst.) 1064, 1065
On 11.6.1944 an order was issued to equipp 1064 and 1065 with 7,5 cm Pak 40/4 auf RSO but then on 25.7.1944 the order was cancelled and they became 'bodst.' again.

By the end of the year 1944 no Art.Pak-Abt. existed anymore. Most had been destroyed in combat and remnants were used to refit other artillery units, others (1057, 1061, 1062, 1063, 1064, 1065) had been converted to Heeres-Artillerie-Abteilungen.
