Japanische U-Boote in Europa

Japanische U-Boote in Europa ?

http://www.combinedfleet.com/I-30.htm

Zitat
2 August 1942:
The I-30 is code-named Sakura ("Cherry Blossom") by the Japanese and "U-Kirschblüte" by the Germans. She arrives in the Bay of Biscay. Off Cape Ortegal, she is met by eight Luftwaffe Junkers Ju-88 attack bombers who provide cover.

Am 2. August erreichte I-30 die Biskaya. Die deutsche Luftwaffe übernahm die Luftsicherung.

Zitat
5 August 1942:
The I-30 is met by eight German M-class minesweepers and one Sperrbrecher (mine barrage breaker) who escort her to Lorient - the largest of the five German U-boat bases on the French coast. The I-30 is the first Japanese submarine to arrive in Europe during World War II.

Zitat
The I-30 ties up to a buoy and her crew is transferred by a French tender to the deck of the U-67. Cdr Edo and his crew are greeted by Grossadmiral Erich Raeder, Oberbefehlshaber (CINC) der Kriegsmarine (OKM), Admiral (later Grossadmiral/Führer) Karl Dönitz, Befehlshaber der Unterseeboote (BdU) and the Japanese Naval Attaché to Germany Captain (later Rear Admiral) Yokoi Tadao who have traveled from their headquarters for the occasion.

The Lorient station band plays martial music and Cdr Edo is decorated with a German medal. A woman presents him with a bouquet of flowers traditionally given to successful arriving U-boat commanders. Ashore, U-boat men, soldiers, nurses, signals women and civilians line up to greet the I-30.

An Bord des deutschen Bootes U-67 wird Kommandant Endo vom Oberbefehlshaber der Kriegsmarine, Großadmiral Erich Raeder, dem Befehlshaber der U-Boote, Admiral Karl Dönitz, und dem japanischen Marineattaché Yokoi Tadao empfangen.

Zitat

Zitat
Endo and his crew travel to Berlin where he is awarded a medal by Adolf Hitler. Later, he and his crew travel to Paris where they visit the Eiffel Tower and the Champs-Elysées before returning to Lorient.

Zitat
22 August 1942:
The I-30 departs Lorient. She carries one Japanese engineer as a passenger. Her cargo includes blueprints of the Würzburg air defense ground radar and one complete set, five German G7a aerial torpedoes and three G7e electric torpedoes, five Torpedovorhalterechner (torpedo data computers), 240 Bolde sonar countermeasure rounds, rocket and glider bombs, antitank guns, Zeiss anti-aircraft artillery director (fire control system), 200 20-mm AA guns, industrial diamonds valued at one million yen and fifty top secret "T-Enigma" coding machines.

Zitat
13 October 1942:
The I-30 arrives off Singapore during the night. Cdr Endo requests a pilot from the No. 10 Special Base Unit, but fails to contact the base because his codes are outdated. Endo then decides to independently navigate the harbor entrance.

At 0930, the I-30 arrives at Keppel harbor, Singapore. The 10 T-Enigmas are disembarked. Cdr Endo dines with the C-in-C, First Southern Expeditionary Fleet, Vice Admiral Okawachi Denshichi (former CO of HIEI) and the staff of the No. 10 Special Base Unit.

The I-30's navigator receives maps of the mine swept area around Singapore. At 1609, she departs for Kure. Three miles E of Keppel harbor she hits a British mine and quickly sinks. Cdr Endo and 96 crewmen are rescued, but 13 men are lost. (In February 1944, off Truk, Cdr Endo is KIA as CO of the I-43).

Divers from the No. 101 Navy Repair Unit recover some of the I-30's cargo including most of the 20-mm guns, TDCs and radar blueprints, but the model of the Würzburg radar is destroyed and the drawings for it are rendered unusable by the salt water.

Zitat
15 February 1943:
Four months later, Tokyo finally informs Berlin of the loss the 40 Enigma machines aboard the I-30. They also inform the Germans of the 1 February 1943 sinking of the I-1 in shallow water at Guadalcanal that possibly compromised the Japanese-German joint-use "Sumatra" code.

Zitat
It was a historic moment. I-30 was the first Japanese submarine to arrive in Europe. As befitted such an important occasion, Grand Admiral Erich Raeder, head of the Kriegsmarine; Admiral Karl Dönitz, commander of the U-boat force; and Captain Tadao Yokoi, Japanese naval attaché to Berlin, were on hand to greet Endo and his crew. The Lorient station band played martial music, and an attractive young woman presented Endo with the bouquet of flowers traditionally given to successful U-boat commanders. While U-boat men fted the Japanese sailors, the sub's cargo of 3,300 pounds of mica and 1,452 pounds of shellac was unloaded along with engineering drawings of the Japanese Type 91 aerial torpedo.

Zitat
Repairs were also made to I-30's Yokosuka E14Y1 floatplane, which was repainted with false Japanese unit markings. The Germans then shot film footage during the floatplane's test flights and later released stories that a Japanese naval air corps was now operating from French bases. While all of this was going on, Endo traveled to Berlin where Hitler presented him with the Iron Cross. The visit came to an end on August 22, when I-30 slipped out of the sub pen and began its journey home. Its cargo included a complete Würzburg air defense ground radar with blueprints and examples of German torpedoes, bombs and fire control systems. Perhaps most important of all, the submarine also carried industrial diamonds valued at one million yen and 50 top-secret Enigma coding machines.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_submarine_I-8

Daraus einige Infos:

Zitat
Commanded by Shinji Uchino, I-8 departed Kure harbor on 1 June 1943, accompanied by I-10 and the submarine tender Hie Maru. Their cargo included two of the famed Type 95 oxygen-propelled torpedoes, torpedo tubes, drawings of an automatic trim system, and a new naval reconnaissance plane, the Yokosuka E14Y. A supplementary crew of 48 men, commanded by Sadatoshi Norita, was also packed into the submarine, intended to man the German submarine (U-1224, a Type IXC/40 U-boat) and bring her back to Japan for reverse engineering.

Zitat
Arriving in Singapore nine days later, I-8 also took on board quinine, tin, and raw rubber before heading for the Japanese base at Penang.

In Singapur nahm das Boot sogar noch weitere Ladung an Bord, darunter einige wertvolle Rohstoffe.

Zitat
On July 21, I-8 entered the Atlantic, where she encountered fierce storms, but was able to continue to German-occupied France.

Am 21. Juli 1943 erreichte I-8 den Atlantik.

Zitat
On August 20, I-8 rendezvoused with the German submarine U-161, commanded by Captain Albrecht Achilles. Two German radio technicians were transferred to I-8, as well as an FuMB 1 "Metox" 600A radar detector, which was installed on the I-8's bridge. As I-8 entered the Bay of Biscay on 29 August, the Luftwaffe sent Ju-88s to provide air cover to Brest, where she arrived safely two days later.

Zitat
The Japanese submarine was warmly welcomed. Parties and visits to Paris and Berlin were organized for the crew for over a month, and German news agencies announced that "now even Japanese submarines are operating in the Atlantic."

Zitat
I-8 left Brest on October 5, with a cargo of German equipment: machine guns, bomb sights, a Daimler-Benz torpedo boat engine, marine chronometers, radars, sonar equipment, anti-aircraft gunsights, electric torpedoes, and penicillin. The submarine also transported Rear Admiral Yokoi, naval attaché to Berlin since 1940; Captain Hosoya, naval attaché to France since December 1939; three German officers; and four radar and hydrophone technicians.

Zitat
I-8 hit rough seas in the South Atlantic off the Cape of Good Hope, which delayed her arrival to Singapore. She radioed her position to Germany, but the message was intercepted by the Allies, prompting an attack by anti-submarine aircraft, which failed. I-8 arrived in Singapore on 5 December, and finally returned to Kure, Japan on 21 December, after a voyage of 30,000 nautical miles (56,000 km).

http://www.historynet.com/world-war-ii-yanagi-missions-japans-underwater-convoys.htm

http://www.combinedfleet.com/I-8.htm

Zitat
31 August 1943:
The I-8 arrives at Brest. Cdr Uchino and his crew turn out on deck in their dress blues. They are greeted by Admiral Theodor Krancke (former CO of Panzerschiff ADMIRAL SCHEER), CINC of the Kriegsmarine's Marineoberkommando West (Group West) and receive German war decorations. The German station band plays welcoming martial music. The event is filmed for propaganda purposes. A French tug assists the I-8 in berthing in Pen "A" of Brest's huge U-boat bunker.

Brest is the home of the 1st U-Flotille "Weddigen" commanded by Knight's Cross winner Korvettenkapitän (later Kapitän zur See, Bundesmarine) Werner Winter (former CO of U-103) with its headquarters at the former French Naval Academy (L'Ecole Navale), a sprawling granite complex overlooking the bay. Later, the Germans host their Japanese counterparts in their luxurious leisure facility at Chateau de Trévarez overlooking the small town of Chateauneuf de Faou.

During the I-8's stay in France, Cdr Uchino meets Grossadmiral Karl Dönitz, CINC of the Kriegsmarine, and her crew visits Paris. A German news agency announces that "now even Japanese submarines are operating in the Atlantic".

http://www.combinedfleet.com/RO-501.htm

Zitat
31 August 1943:
Brest, France. LtCdr Norita Sadatoshi (former CO of I-122) and a 48-man spare crew arrive from Penang, Malaya aboard Cdr Uchino Shinichi's I-8. Norita and his crew engage in customary sight-seeing in France. Upon completion of their liberty, they travel by train to U-boat training school facilities on the Baltic Sea where, for the next six months, the Germans train Norita and his crew in the handling, tactics and operations of a Type IXC/40 U-boat.

Zitat
20 October 1943:
Hamburg, Germany. U-1224, a Type IXC/40 U-boat, is completed at Deutsche Werft AG and commissioned in the Kriegsmarine. Kapitänleutnant Georg Preuss is the Commanding Officer.[1]

October 1943-February 1944:
U-1224 is assigned to the 31st Flotilla for training.

15 February 1944 - German Operation "Marco Polo II":
Kiel, Germany. In a ceremony in a submarine pen, U-1224 is handed over to the IJN. The Japanese rename her "Satsuki (Month of First Buds) No. 2." [2]

Zitat
28 February 1944:
U-1224 is commissioned in the IJN as RO-501. LtCdr Norita is the CO. RO-501 is assigned for training at the German U-boat anti-aircraft school at Swinemünde (now Swinoujscie, Poland) on the Baltic Sea.

28 March 1944:
Berlin, Germany. The future passengers of RO-501 depart for Kiel by train.

Zitat
30 March 1944:
Kiel, Germany. RO-501 departs carrying a cargo of mercury, lead, steel, uncut optical glass and aluminum in her keel and drawings, models and blueprints necessary to construct a Type IXC U-boat. In addition to submarine-related materials there is a full set of Messerschmitt Me-163 "Komet” rocket interceptor blueprints. [3]

Captain (Rear Admiral, posthumously) Emi Tetsushiro (former CO of I-8) is among RO-501's four passengers. (In April 43, Emi traveled as a passenger aboard I-29 from Penang, then transferred to U-180 for France to observe German U-boat building techniques.) In addition to Emi, there is Captain Engineer Yamada Seiichi and two other engineers. The crew also includes two Germans--one radar operator and one pilot. The crew is 52 men strong. The ETA at Penang is mid-July 1944.

Zitat
Early April 1944:
Norway. RO-501 arrives at Kristiansund-South submarine base to embark fuel and supplies. Departs in company of U-859 under Kapitänleutnant Johann Jebsen.

Zitat
Late April 1944:
W of Azores. Refuels from U-488.

Zitat
6 May 1944:
LtCdr Norita sends a coded signal from a planned reporting position at 30N, 37W and adds that his boat had been forced underwater two days earlier. The signal is detected by high frequency/direction finding ("Huff Duff") equipment aboard a hunter-killer group. It is the last signal received from RO-501.

Zitat
13 May 1944:
Atlantic Narrows, 500 miles W of the Cape Verde Islands. Lt John E. Johansen's FRANCIS M. ROBINSON (DE-220) is a member of Captain Aurelius B. Vosseller's USS BOGUE (CVE-9) hunter-killer group, TG-22.2, with four other destroyer escorts of CortDiv 51.

The ROBINSON is on an ASW patrol making 17 knots and heading 200 degrees. At 1900 hours, the ROBINSON's sonar operator detects a target that he classifies as a submarine at 825 yards. The BOGUE turns away. Lt Johansen streams a "foxer" (noisemaker) to decoy any possible acoustic-tracking torpedoes that the submarine may have fired.

The ROBINSON fires a barrage of twenty-four ahead-thrown Mark 10 "hedgehog" projector charges, followed by five salvos of Mark 8 magnetic influence depth charges. Four underwater explosions are heard and recorded. RO-501 sinks at 18-08N, 33-13W in 2,900 feet of water.

http://www.combinedfleet.com/RO-500.htm

Zitat
10 May 1943:
Lorient, France. Early in the morning Vice Admiral Nomura and Maj Sugita arrive from Berlin on a train. After 1300, U-511 ("Marco Polo 1") departs for Penang, Malaya. U-511 also carries a full set of Messerschmitt Me-163 "Komet” rocket interceptor blueprints , samples of yellow fever vaccine. spare torpedoes and supplies for the German U-boat "Gruppe Monsun" (Monsoon) being organized at Penang. [2]

U-511 carries a crew of 49 and nine passengers - five Germans and four Japanese. Among the Japanese are Vice Admiral Nomura and Major Sugita. The Germans include Dr. Ernst Wörmann, ambassador to Wang Jing-we's pro-Japanese collaborationist government at Nanking, China and Martin Spahn, leader-designee of the NSDAP (Nazi) party in Japan and three engineers from U-boat builder Deschimag AG Weser at Bremen: Mssrs. Herberlein, an auxiliary engine specialist, Hans Schmidt, a welding technician, and Müller of the Type IXC construction office.

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/U-Boot-Krieg

Zitat

April 1945 in der Java-See versenkt.

Oberleutnant Werner Striegler blieb ebenfalls in Asien.

13 October 1943:
I-34, still under Cdr Irie, departs Kure on the first leg of a "Yanagi" mission to Nazi-occupied France. She is the third IJN submarine to undertake such a mission. The Japanese code name I-34 "Momi" (Fir) and the Germans code name her the "U-Tanne". Radio traffic between Tokyo and Berlin concerning I-34's mission is transmitted in diplomatic code, but is intercepted and deciphered by Allied code-breakers.

22 October 1943:
I-34 arrives at Singapore. Her five passengers, including Rear Admiral Kojima Hideo (former CO of CL KASHII) and two Mitsubishi engineers, have already arrived there by plane. Rear Admiral Kojima visits Cdr Irie aboard I-34 to discuss the details of the sortie.

Am 22. Oktober 1943 lief I-34 in Singapur ein.

4 November 1943:
Seletar Naval Base, Singapore. I-34 embarks a cargo of tin, tungsten, raw rubber and opium. Tin ingots are inserted into submarine’s keel as ballast, bales of rubber are loaded below the upper deck planking. Tungsten bars are loaded to forward and aft crew spaces and opium stored in wooden boxes in the floatplane hangar. The initial diving tests reveal that the additional cargo has upset I-34’s trim, preventing crash-dives. Her departure is delayed. Rear Admiral Kojima and I-34's other passengers decide to take a train and rejoin the submarine in Penang except Constuctor LtCdr Arima Masao, who attempts to cure the trim problems en route to Penang

11 November 1943:
Early in the morning I-34 departs Seletar for Penang. The Germans plan to refuel I-34 in the Indian Ocean from the supply ship BOGOTA on 25 November and 4 December 1943 before the submarine enters the South Atlantic.

13 November 1943:
30 miles S of Penang. Alerted by an "Ultra" special intelligence signal, LtCdr (Later Captain) Mervyn R. G. Wingfield's submarine HMS TAURUS sights I-34 running on the surface at 14 knots. At 0730, Wingfield sets up and fires six torpedoes. One hits I-34's starboard side just below her conning tower. She sinks at 115 feet ,10 nm NW of the Muka lighthouse at 05-17N, 100-05E.

Some twenty sailors in the forward crew space survive the attack and are trapped inside the submarine. CPO Miyake Kazumasa manages to open a deck hatch, allowing them to escape. Of these, 14 are picked up by a native junk and arrive at Penang that evening, but 84 crewmembers are KIA. I-34 is the first IJN submarine that is sunk by a Royal Navy submarine. Following the loss of I-34 the IJN diverts all Europe-bound submarines away from Penang.

5 April 1943:
I-29, still under Cdr Izu, with Captain Teraoka, ComSubDiv 14, embarked, departs Penang on a secret mission. She carries eleven tons of cargo including, one Type 89, two Type 2 aerial torpedoes and two tons of gold bars for the Japanese Embassy in Berlin. She also carries drawings and blueprints of AKAGI (for use in the construction of GRAF ZEPPELIN) and Type A midget submarine. Cdr (Rear Admiral posthumously) Emi Tetsushiro (former CO of I-8) now a member of the IJN's Technical Department and LtCdr (Captain, posthumously) Tomonaga Hideo, a submarine design specialist involved in the Kriegsmarine's midget subs project, are aboard as passengers. They are charged to observe U-boat building techniques.

Indian Ocean, about 450 miles SE of Madagascar (Kriegsmarine grid KR 5276). I-29 arrives at the planned rendezvous area one day earlier than expected.

Zitat
26 April 1943:
The I-29 rendezvouses with the German U-180 in the Mozambique Channel. Fregattenkapitän Werner Musenberg's Type IXD-1 U-boat left Kiel on 9 February carrying blueprints of a Type IXC/40 submarine, a sample of German hollow charge (Hafthohlladung HHL 3) and quinine sample for future Japanese shipments, a torpedo tube that holds a gun barrel and ammunition, three cases holding 432 Bold sonar decoys, documents and mail from the German embassy in Tokyo.

The U-boat also carries revolutionist Subhas Chandra Bose, Chief (Netaji) of the anti-British Indian National Army of Liberation (Azad Hind Fauj) and his aide Major Dr. Habib Hassan, a former Oxford student. Bose is the leader of the Japanese-sponsored Free India (Azad Hind) Government-in-exile.
